This used to be a huge thing… crocheted or knit dishcloths. Not so much anymore… But I still love them! Some of the ones I’ve made I’ve had for several years! And if they do wear out, they are really easy to replace. Just make more! I have not bought sponges in years because I prefer these. I don’t even care if the bright colors get bleached to kill germs. As I said, if they are worn beyond their usefulness, I just make more! LOL
A good sturdy cotton yarn is best. Lily Sugar ‘n Cream is really good for this type of project. It’s kind of rough and stiff to work with, but it holds up well to being wet and to acting as a scrubber! There are other brands that work well for this too. I’ve tried the Hobby Lobby brand “I Love This Cotton”, but it just doesn’t hold up as well. It tends to leave lint behind and that’s not helpful when doing dishes!
